Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called for a measured approach to the conflict in the Middle East, emphasizing the need to address public concerns about potential escalation.
Speaking to parliament on Wednesday, Starmer responded to criticism from US President Donald Trump over Britain’s limited support for American strikes on Iran. “I know the whole country is worried about the potential for escalation. We need to act, therefore, with clarity, with purpose and with a cool head,” he said.
Starmer also highlighted that the UK has been working closely with the United States in pre-deploying military assets to the region. These assets include air defence and counter-drone systems, as well as F-35 fighter jets.
The prime minister stressed that careful coordination with the US is intended to ensure the UK’s response is responsible and measured, reflecting both strategic interests and public concerns over the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
