A Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking the registration of two FIRs for a single incident, terming it inadmissible.
Justice Jamal Khan Mandukhel reprimanded the petitioner, Waseem Ahmed Khan, for filing the case, noting that such petitions contribute to the growing backlog in the Supreme Court, now exceeding 60,000 cases. "We are repeatedly reminded of the pending cases," Justice Mandukhel remarked, questioning the necessity of the petition.
Expressing his disapproval, Justice Mandukhel asked, "Why not dismiss your application with a penalty? You are a lawyer—will you also file such cases in courts?"
Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar highlighted that the court had already ruled on similar matters in the Sughra Bibi case. He further questioned why the petitioner had not approached the High Court to address the issue of the second FIR.
The bench's decision underscores the judiciary's concern over frivolous litigation burdening the system.
