In response to growing concerns among citizens awaiting their smart registration cards, the Punjab Excise Department issued a statement shedding light on the delays and outlining steps to resolve the issue.
Many applicants have reported not receiving their smart cards despite having applied weeks ago, prompting the Excise Department to provide an official explanation.
According to the department, the tendering process has been the primary cause behind the late deliveries, leading to a backlog in the distribution of these essential documents.
The department acknowledged the inconvenience caused to citizens and assured them that the delayed delivery is a temporary setback.
In an official statement, the Excise Department mentioned that they anticipate a return to regular, uninterrupted card deliveries within the next three to four weeks.
This delay comes on the heels of a prior decision by the department to halt the production of smart cards for vehicles after the contracted company responsible for manufacturing ceased its operations.
Despite issuing a late tender to address the situation, the progress faced hurdles beyond the technical bid phase. At that time, the Excise Department was grappling with a backlog of 2.5 million number plates, prompting them to explore alternative solutions, such as the introduction of virtual cards.
In a recent development aimed at easing the registration process for citizens, the Excise Department has announced a doorstep service for car and bike registrations.
To avail this service, individuals can book an appointment via the Punjab Information Technology Board’s helpline at 080008786. A representative from the department will visit the applicant's doorstep, streamlining the entire registration process on the spot.
