Pakistani businesses have a renewed opportunity to tap into the vast European market, as the European Union (EU) extended Pakistan’s Generalized System of Preferences Plus (GSP Plus) status for another four years, until 2027.
EU Ambassador Reena Kavinka, visiting the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, urged Pakistani traders to go beyond their traditional strengths in textiles and explore other sectors with high potential under GSP Plus. These include gems and jewelry, tourism, handicrafts, and auto parts.
Notably, Reena Kavinka clarified that the extension of the EU's GSP Plus for Pakistan maintains the existing framework until 2027, providing stability for businesses. Looking ahead, she expressed expectations for negotiations on a new directive for GSP Plus after potential political changes following the upcoming elections in June 2024.
Identifying sectors like gems and jewelry, tourism, handicrafts, and auto parts as untapped opportunities under GSP Plus, Kavinka urged better utilization to boost Pakistan's exports to the EU. She highlighted the potential for increased exports, emphasizing the need for Pakistani businesses to capitalize on the GSP Plus status.
The EU Ambassador revealed plans to establish a platform promoting business-to-business relations between Pakistan and the European Union. This initiative aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by fostering strong linkages and facilitating trade opportunities. Kavinka particularly underscored the potential of Pakistan's gems and jewelry sector, encouraging local businesses to add value and export finished products to Europe.
During the event, Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh also shared insights on the economic prospects and opportunities arising from the extended GSP Plus status.
