Pakistan Railways has announced an increase in train fares following a sharp rise in diesel prices. The revised fares for passenger and freight services will come into effect from March 9, according to a railway spokesperson.
Pakistan Railways decided to raise fares after diesel prices increased by around 20%, significantly increasing the operational cost of running trains.
Officials said the fare adjustment was necessary to cope with rising fuel expenses and maintain railway operations across the country.
Economy, AC class fares revised
According to a spokesperson for Pakistan Railways, economy class fares have been increased by 5%. At the same time, AC class fares have been increased by 10%.
The spokesperson said passengers will have to bear the additional operational costs of running trains due to the recent increase in fuel prices.
Freight charges also increased
In addition to passenger fares, Pakistan Railways has also increased freight car fares by 20%. Officials said the increase reflects the significant rise in fuel expenses, which directly impacts the cost of freight transportation by rail.
The revised fares will apply to all trains starting March 9, according to the railway spokesperson. However, the decision will not apply to bookings that have already been made, ensuring that passengers who purchased tickets earlier will not face additional charges.
