Google appears to be preparing a new feature for its AI research and note-taking tool NotebookLM that aims to make notebooks easier to understand at a glance.
The update, spotted in development, would allow the platform to automatically generate short summaries for notebooks, helping users quickly identify their contents.
NotebookLM has sparked debate across social media platforms and online forums about whether the tool is as useful as many users claim.
Despite the discussion, many agree that the AI-powered platform significantly boosts productivity. It helps users save time by organizing documents, creating notes, and managing research materials more efficiently.
What continues to attract attention is the pace at which Google is introducing changes and improvements to the platform.
Google working on multiple new features
Recently, reports suggested that Google is developing features designed to help users find notebooks more quickly.
While those improvements are still under development, another upcoming change has now surfaced. This new feature focuses on giving users better insight into what a notebook contains before they open it.
NotebookLM to provide more context
Currently, when users create a notebook in NotebookLM, the system automatically generates a title based on the content of the sources if a custom title is not provided.
At the moment, this title is the only indicator of what the notebook is about. For users managing several notebooks on similar topics, this approach can sometimes make it difficult to distinguish between them.
According to information shared by tech leaker TestingCatalog, Google is now working on a feature that will allow notebooks to include short summaries.
The upcoming feature will enable NotebookLM to automatically generate a brief summary explaining the notebook’s content.
If a user does not add a custom summary, the system will create one automatically. This AI-generated description will refresh each time the notebook is opened.
However, users will also have the option to override the automated text and write their own summary if they prefer.
More customisation options in development
In addition to the summary feature, two other customization options are reportedly being tested.
According to TestingCatalog, Google is working on a feature that would allow users to set:
-
A custom avatar
-
The name of the notebook creator
The avatar would appear on the notebook cover and on the homepage alongside the notebook title. The creator’s name would be displayed next to the avatar.
Google has not yet confirmed when these features will officially arrive on NotebookLM.
However, since they have already appeared in development leaks, it suggests the company may be close to rolling them out. Users may not have to wait months before gaining access to the improvements.
