Iran has condemned U.S. and Israeli strikes on its oil storage depots and a freshwater desalination plant, warning that attacks on critical infrastructure could have serious consequences.
The strikes, which hit Tehran on Saturday evening, have intensified regional tensions and raised concerns over potential retaliatory action.
Israeli warplanes targeted oil storage depots and refining facilities in Tehran, marking the first time Israel has hit such locations since its broader campaign against Iran began last week with U.S. support.
Israel’s public broadcaster, KAN, reported that the Air Force launched a new wave of strikes aimed at disrupting Iran’s infrastructure and military capabilities.
Following the attacks, explosions were reportedly heard in Tehran, according to Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency.
Iran responds and condemns attacks
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that Israel’s Haifa refinery was targeted by missiles in response to the Tehran refinery strikes, as reported by Fars news agency.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the attacks on Qeshm Island’s desalination plant a “blatant and desperate crime” by the U.S., noting that water supplies for 30 villages were affected.
He warned that targeting Iran’s infrastructure sets a dangerous precedent and could prompt Tehran to consider retaliatory measures, including strikes on critical Gulf facilities.
Regional impact and risks
Experts note that attacks on desalination plants could have severe consequences for the Gulf region, which relies on desalinated water for roughly 90 percent of its drinking supply.
Iran has accused Gulf countries of aiding U.S. and Israeli aggression, suggesting that critical infrastructure in the region could be at risk if the conflict escalates further.
Background
The strikes come amid ongoing tensions after the U.S. and Israel launched large-scale attacks on Iran on February 28, killing over 1,000 people, including Ali Khamenei, more than 150 schoolgirls, and senior military officials.
Iran has since retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. bases, diplomatic facilities, military personnel, and multiple Israeli cities, intensifying the cycle of strikes across the Middle East.
