Google has launched a major update for its Google Maps on Android and iOS, bringing artificial intelligence to the forefront of location search and navigation.
The update introduces two key features: Ask Maps, a conversational AI search tool, and Immersive Navigation, a redesigned 3D navigation experience.
Currently, Google Maps relies on a simple search box and list of results. With Ask Maps, users can ask complex, natural-language questions such as, “Where can I charge my phone without waiting in line for coffee?” or “Is there a public tennis court with lights I can play at tonight?”
The system uses Google’s Gemini AI models to analyse live data, imagery, user reviews, and personalised preferences, delivering customised answers and maps. Users can book reservations, save places, share recommendations, and get directions—all within the conversational interface.
Meanwhile, Immersive Navigation transforms the driving experience by replacing flat 2D maps with a dynamic 3D environment that reflects real-world buildings, roads, and terrain. It provides more intelligent guidance, highlighting lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stops.
The AI integrates fresh Street View and aerial imagery, offering natural-sounding voice directions and real-time alerts for accidents, roadworks, or traffic disruptions. Drivers can preview destinations, see building entrances, and receive guidance for parking and street positioning.
Experts say the changes have significant implications for businesses. As Google shifts to AI-driven conversational search, accurately optimised Google Business Profiles will be critical. Incomplete or poorly maintained profiles risk being overlooked in these AI-generated results, regardless of a business’s quality or reputation.
Currently, Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation are rolling out in the United States and India, with desktop support and broader international availability expected in the coming months. Google has not yet confirmed a UK launch date, but SEO experts advise businesses to prepare their profiles now to fully benefit from the update when it arrives.
