In a significant development, the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project has achieved notable progress as the Federal Cabinet Committee on Energy has given its seal of approval for the laying of gas pipelines within Pakistan.
Chaired by the caretaker Energy Minister Muhammad Ali, the Cabinet Energy Committee meeting witnessed the crucial decision to proceed with the construction of the pipeline extending from Gwadar to the Iran border.
The project, spearheaded by the Interstate Gas System, aims to fortify energy infrastructure and enhance bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Iran.
According to the post-meeting announcement, Pakistan is set to lay approximately 80 kilometers of pipeline within its territory, with the ambitious endeavor expected to be completed within a year.
The funding for this strategic initiative will be sourced from the Gas Infrastructure Development Cess, ensuring financial viability for the project.
Furthermore, the Cabinet Committee affirmed its support for the recommendations put forth by the Prime Minister's Ministerial Committee, which was established in September 2023 to oversee the project's progress and address any pertinent issues.
According to the reports, the successful completion of this venture will not only enable Pakistan to circumvent a hefty fine of $18 billion but also promises to deliver access to cost-effective gas resources.
