The Indonesian Geophysics Agency (BKMG) reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred on Friday off the coast of Java island, Indonesia, at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles).
The epicenter was found in the East Java province, 132 km north of Tuban, according to BMKG.
Multiple posts on social media by people in those locations indicate that the earthquakes were felt strongly all over East Java, including its capital Surabaya, as well as cities in nearby provinces.
BMKG stated there is no chance that the earthquake may cause a tsunami. No early reports of damage were received.
An earlier earthquake that shook Java, the major island of Indonesia, claimed the lives of at least 44 people.
“There have been dozens of people killed. Hundreds, even maybe thousands of houses are damaged. So far, 44 people have died,” Adam, a spokesman for the West Javan town of Cianjur, who goes by one name like many Indonesians, told AFP.
