United States Energy Secretary Chris Wright has said the war with Iran could end within a few weeks.
In a statement, the US energy chief said the energy supply would improve once the fighting ends. He said restoration of supply would push oil prices down and expressed hope that the situation could return to normal within weeks.
Meanwhile, in an interview, Iran said Tehran had not sought any ceasefire and that the war would continue until President Donald Trump declares the conflict unlawful. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran would continue to take every possible measure for its defence. He said strikes on US allies had taken place as a retaliatory response.
The Iranian foreign minister said US forces were launching attacks from the territory of Gulf countries. He said Iran was targeting only American installations and military bases.
Araghchi also said Iranian forces had provided safe passage to aircraft from several countries. He added that a number of states had approached Iran seeking secure transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
Separately, President Trump’s adviser Kevin Hassett said the United States had so far spent $12 billion on the war against Iran.
He said the United States had everything it needed in the Middle East. Hassett added that the biggest issue at present was the price of oil.
He said the global economy would stabilise only after the war ends and that an increase in oil supply could follow if Iran shows flexibility.
