Maltese chocolatier Andrew Farrugia, who already holds several world records, has set a new title in Guinness World Records by creating the world’s longest chocolate sculpture.
Working together with students from the Institute of Tourism Studies, Farrugia produced a 55.27-metre-long chocolate train. The creation featured a vintage steam locomotive along with 22 chocolate carriages, each weighing around 160 kilograms (352 pounds).
The record-breaking chocolate sculpture was unveiled in Milan ahead of this year’s Winter Olympic Games. However, Farrugia and his team had been working on the ambitious project for several months before its presentation.
The planning process alone took nearly a year. Farrugia began practical work in October last year, first preparing clay models of every section of the train before crafting the chocolate pieces.
Around 5,000 individual chocolate components were cut and carved in Bergamo. They were then carefully wrapped in plastic and transported to Milan, where Farrugia’s team spent several days assembling the pieces to complete the impressive sculpture in time for the Winter Olympics.
Speaking to Guinness World Records, Farrugia said the project consisted of approximately 5,000 separate pieces, including about 180 wheels made specifically for the train’s carriages.
He added that the record was intended to leave a memorable legacy for his institution, his country and his family.
