The Spanish government has recalled its ambassador from Israel, according to the official gazette published on Wednesday.
Sources in the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Spanish embassy in Tel Aviv will now operate under the charge d’affaires.
Spain established diplomatic relations with Israel in 1986, but relations between the two countries have often been tense. Spain has strongly opposed the war in Gaza as well as US and Israeli actions against Iran.
Yesterday, the Spanish Foreign Minister said that despite threats of trade sanctions from US President Donald Trump over Spain’s opposition to a war against Iran, relations between Spain and the United States remain normal.
The government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez last week declared a war against Iran illegal and barred the use of joint military bases in southern Spain by US aircraft for operations against Iran.
