US President Donald Trump on Monday called on allied nations to help reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, saying countries that rely on oil shipments through the waterway should step forward to assist in restoring normal maritime traffic.
Speaking during a news conference, Trump said the United States had taken strong military action to reduce the threat posed by Iran and expected support from partner nations in dealing with the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump also claimed that US strikes had severely weakened Iran’s military capabilities, saying Iranian ships and aircraft were destroyed and members of the country’s leadership were eliminated during the attacks. He added that Iran had also lost its radar capabilities following the strikes.
According to Trump, the United States had destroyed 90 percent of Iran’s missile capacity and 85 percent of its drone capability. He further claimed Iranian mine-laying boats in the Strait of Hormuz had been destroyed and that Iranian attacks had decreased by about 90 percent.
The US president also said more than 100 Iranian vessels had been sunk and noted that discussions had been held with several countries regarding the situation in the vital shipping lane. He added that it remained unclear whether Iran had actually placed mines in the waterway but stressed that allied countries should support efforts to address the issue.
