Iran has raised a red flag over the dome of the Jamkaran Mosque in Qom, a symbol traditionally associated with revenge, following the martyrdom of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iranian media stated that the flag was hoisted atop the Jamkaran Mosque after Ayatollah Khamenei was martyred. The mosque, situated in the holy city of Qom, is regarded as a significant religious site, and the raising of the red flag is widely viewed as a sign of retribution.
In a statement, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had destroyed a US-made MQ-9 drone. It added that Iran’s skies were unsafe for hostile aircraft.
The Israeli military launched fresh strikes on the Iranian capital. The Zionist forces claimed bombardment of central Tehran, marking the first time the area had been targeted since last year’s war.
In Tel Aviv, 40 buildings sustained damage during an Iranian attack.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was martyred in a US strike while meeting advisers at his office, according to Iranian reports. He was present in his office at the time of the attack.
A 40-day national mourning period and seven days of public holiday have been announced across the country.
