Federal ministers on Tuesday urged caution in public commentary about the ongoing Iran conflict, saying irresponsible remarks could affect Pakistan’s diplomatic relations and foreign policy.
Speaking at a joint press conference, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Minister of State Talal Chaudhry emphasized the importance of responsible discourse during a sensitive regional situation.
Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said the situation in the region has become complicated following the attack on Iran. He noted that Pakistan’s geographical position places it in a challenging situation, requiring careful diplomatic handling.
“Many comments have been made recently, which created unease at the diplomatic level,” the law minister said.
According to him, some countries questioned whether certain remarks represented Pakistan’s official stance or merely personal opinions.
Pakistan pushing for diplomatic solution
Tarar said Pakistan has been actively working toward a diplomatic resolution since the conflict began.
“Pakistan made great efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict,” he said.
He noted that Pakistan was the first country to condemn the attack on Iran and also expressed grief over the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The minister added that Pakistan also condemned attacks that later targeted Gulf countries, emphasizing that Islamabad viewed such developments seriously.
Pakistan a responsible nuclear state
The law minister stressed that Pakistan remains a responsible nuclear state and follows a balanced and principled foreign policy.
“Pakistan has its own position regarding defense and foreign policy,” he said.
He added that while expressing opinions, citizens and commentators must keep the Constitution and Pakistan’s foreign policy interests in mind.
Freedom of expression comes with constitutional limits
Tarar referred to Article 19 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression but also sets certain legal restrictions. He explained that the article includes safeguards related to Islam, Pakistan’s security, and friendly relations with other countries.
“Anything that damages friendly relations with any country is also prohibited,” the law minister said.
He stressed that everyone has the right to express their views, but constitutional limits and restrictions must be respected.
Tarar said the purpose of the press conference was to ensure transparency regarding the government’s stance. “The government’s policy is very clear and fair,” he said.
He also warned that when constitutional red lines are crossed, legal consequences may follow.
“When a criminal case is registered, people say there has been excess, but such action happens when the red line of the Constitution is crossed,” he added.
PM closely monitoring situation
Tarar said the prime minister postponed his visit to Russia in order to closely monitor the evolving regional conflict. He added that the prime minister is in contact with global leaders, while friendly countries are also trying to resolve the crisis diplomatically.
“The region is going through a difficult time,” he said, urging people to adopt a positive and responsible approach.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that social media and digital platforms have created intense competition for views and engagement.
“In vlogs and online content, two countries are sometimes discussed in a way that increases views,” he said. However, he stressed that such commentary can sometimes be misinterpreted by other nations as Pakistan’s official policy.
Foreign policy not like local politics
The information minister warned against treating foreign policy matters like domestic political debates. “Foreign policy should not be treated like local politics,” he said.
“Local politics is different -- you can criticize it a hundred times.”
He added that Pakistan maintains strong relations with Muslim countries and regional partners, and those ties should be handled carefully in public discourse.
Tarar acknowledged that many Pakistani journalists and anchors have shown responsible behavior while discussing the conflict. However, he urged media professionals and commentators to remain cautious because statements can affect Pakistan’s diplomatic relationships.
He also compared the coverage of the conflict by Indian media and Pakistani media, saying their approaches were significantly different.
Govt calls for national unity during sensitive times
The law minister emphasized that protecting Pakistan’s interests during a critical time is a national responsibility. He said tensions in the region should not lead to careless statements that could worsen diplomatic relations.
“We should not let go of the reins of caution in comments and speeches,” he said.
Tarar added that Pakistan remains committed to reducing tensions and promoting peace in the region.
