Apple’s latest laptop, the MacBook Neo, is gaining attention not just for its affordability but also for improved repairability. A detailed teardown by iFixit suggests it may be the most repairable MacBook in more than a decade.
According to an in-depth teardown by iFixit, the MacBook Neo stands out as the most repairable MacBook in about fourteen years.
The repair-focused website pointed to several internal design changes that make the device easier to service compared to previous MacBook models.
The biggest improvement, according to iFixit, is the laptop’s battery design.
Unlike older MacBook models where batteries are often glued into place, the MacBook Neo’s battery sits in a tray secured with 18 screws. While that may sound like a lot of screws, the teardown team emphasized that screws are still far easier to deal with than adhesive during repairs.
iFixit even noted that the change “sent cheers across the iFixit office”, as it significantly simplifies battery replacement for technicians and users.
Other features that improve repairability
Beyond the battery, several additional design changes contribute to the laptop’s improved repairability.
Flat Disassembly Structure
The MacBook Neo reportedly features a flat disassembly tree, which allows technicians to remove components more easily during repairs.
Improved Replacement Compatibility
iFixit also found that Repair Assistant, Apple’s software used during hardware repairs, appears to accept replacement parts without complaint.
Easier Component Replacement
The teardown further revealed that the display and keyboard are easier to replace compared to earlier MacBook designs.
Despite these improvements, iFixit still identified several issues that limit the laptop’s repairability.
Key components such as RAM and storage remain soldered onto the motherboard, meaning they cannot be easily upgraded or replaced.
Because of these limitations, iFixit ultimately awarded the MacBook Neo a repairability score of 6 out of 10.
However, the team noted that for a MacBook, this is considered a strong score.
