Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi approved on Tuesday a proposal for a waste-to-fuel project in Peshawar under a public-private partnership.
He directed that the proposal submitted by a private company be presented in the market to ensure transparency and competition. The approval was given at the 10th meeting of the Public-Private Partnership Committee, chaired by the chief minister.
Provincial finance minister Muzammil Aslam, Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, administrative secretaries of relevant departments and other members of the committee attended the meeting via video link.
A briefing informed participants that material recovery and processing facilities would be established at the Shamshatoo landfill site in Peshawar under the project.
It was further stated that the project would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support environmentally friendly waste management, while also leading to a reduction in waste accumulation at the landfill site and an improvement in the environment.
Participants were told that, following its success in the provincial capital, the project would be extended to divisional headquarters.
The chief minister said the waste-to-energy project would lay the foundation of a modern and sustainable waste management system in Peshawar, adding that it would prove beneficial not only for the environment but also for the economy.
