US officials have confirmed that the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford sustained significant damage following a fire incident.
According to American authorities, the vessel is being sent to a Greek island for repairs after suffering extensive damage. The USS Gerald R. Ford was affected by the fire, and repairs are expected to take time. Two US personnel were injured in the incident.
It is worth noting that the USS Gerald R. Ford is considered one of the largest and most advanced warships in the world, and a decision has been made to withdraw it from active deployment for now.
A US Navy spokesperson stated that the fire broke out on March 12 in the ship’s laundry area and took nearly 30 hours to fully extinguish. Following the incident, the carrier will undergo repairs at a Greek port.
According to The New York Times, around 600 sailors lost their sleeping berths in the fire and have been sleeping on the floor for the past week.
After repairs, the aircraft carrier USS George H. W. Bush is expected to be deployed to the Middle East soon.
It is also noteworthy that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had claimed responsibility for a missile attack on the USS Gerald R. Ford; however, US officials have denied any such attack on the vessel.
