Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has criticized the country’s late-night market culture, highlighting the strain it places on electricity usage and the public.
Speaking publicly, Asif said Pakistan is “the only country in the world where markets open after noon and close past midnight.” He noted that this issue has been raised repeatedly at various levels, but governments remain powerless against influential traders.
The minister expressed frustration over widespread electricity theft and inefficient energy use, despite the country receiving ample sunlight throughout the year. He contrasted Pakistan with other nations, where markets close shortly after sunset and weekly holidays are standard.
Asif also pointed to the role of media, saying the press discusses minor issues in detail but remains silent on the problem of late-night markets and electricity misuse. He called for public awareness and responsible energy consumption, urging businesses to adopt shorter hours and efficient practices to reduce the energy burden on the country.
