Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has signaled a potential withdrawal of support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan program.
According to reports from the "Voice of America," a delegation led by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar expressed reservations about the loan program during discussions with IMF representatives.
The PTI delegation conveyed to the IMF representatives that their previous support for the loan program was contingent upon transparent elections. However, they highlighted concerns that transparent elections were not being upheld in the country, leading to the withdrawal of support for the IMF program.
Last year, the coalition government had sealed a three-billion-dollar agreement with the IMF, with prior backing from various political parties after discussions with IMF representatives. The recent meetings between the IMF delegation and leaders from PML-N, Peoples Party, and Tehreek-e-Insaf aimed at ensuring policy continuity. Notably, during these discussions, the founder chairman of PTI had previously supported the IMF agreement.
The PTI's latest stance underscores their insistence on transparent electoral processes, pivoting their support for the IMF loan program based on the fulfillment of these conditions. This move signals a potential reevaluation of the PTI's alignment with the IMF's policies.
