The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has rolled out relief program under its updated Residency Amnesty Process, offering illegal expatriates the opportunity to rectify their residency status or leave the country without penalties.
This initiative, aimed at those with expired visas or work permits, comes with a 60-day window for securing new employment, marking a lifeline for many living in the country without legal documentation.
The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), the authority overseeing the amnesty program, announced that the scheme would assist individuals in either regularizing their status or leaving the UAE with ease.

Amnesty for residency violators
For expatriates with expired residency permits, the process offers two main pathways:
- Switch employers: Individuals can transfer to a new employer, provided the new company applies for a fresh work permit
- Stay with current employer: Those wishing to remain with their current employer can renew their residency permit as long as the employer requests the renewal
Overstayed visa holders
The amnesty also covers those who have overstayed their visas. Two primary options have been outlined:
- Work for new employer: A new employer can apply for a work permit, allowing the individual to remain in the country legally
- Leave the country: For those opting to leave, an Exit Permit can be requested, enabling them to exit the UAE without facing legal action or fines.
Expired Work permits
Expats with expired work permits can also benefit from the amnesty. In these cases:
- Stay with current employer: If an individual's residency and work permits have expired, their current employer can renew the work permit. Any previous complaints lodged against the employee will be addressed during the renewal process
- Switch employers: Alternatively, a new employer may apply for a fresh work permit
