Billie Eilish is reportedly stepping into the world of acting with her first on-screen role.
The singer will make her movie acting debut in a film adaptation of The Bell Jar, the classic novel by Sylvia Plath.
According to a report by People (magazine), Billie Eilish will star in the upcoming film adaptation of The Bell Jar.
The project will be directed by Sarah Polley, who is also adapting the screenplay from Sylvia Plath’s 1963 novel.
The film is currently in development and will be produced for Focus Features.
Although this will mark Eilish’s first acting role in a feature film, the singer is no stranger to Hollywood recognition.
She has already won two Academy Awards for songs she co-wrote with her brother Finneas O'Connell.
The award-winning tracks were featured in the films Barbie and No Time to Die.
Classic novel returns to screen
The Bell Jar is the only novel published during Sylvia Plath’s lifetime before her death in 1963 at the age of 30.
The story follows Esther Greenwood, a talented young woman who begins struggling with her mental health after securing a magazine job in New York City.
The novel explores themes of mental illness, feminism, societal pressure, and ambition, offering a deeply personal portrait of a brilliant mind gradually unraveling.
In the upcoming film, Billie Eilish is set to portray Esther Greenwood.
Previous adaptation attempts
Over the years, several attempts have been made to adapt The Bell Jar for film.
Actors including Julia Stiles, Kirsten Dunst, Dakota Fanning, and Frankie Shaw were previously linked to different versions of the project.
However, none of those adaptations ultimately made it to the big screen.
