A recent international study has revealed that a drug currently being tested in clinical trials for Hepatitis C may also be effective against the Hepatitis E virus, which annually claims the lives of around 70,000 people worldwide.
Hepatitis E, a potentially fatal liver infection, has so far had no approved vaccine or specific treatment. However, researchers now believe a breakthrough may be on the horizon.
The study, conducted by a team of scientists from Bochum and Heidelberg in Germany and Beijing in China, identified the compound Bmnfosbuvir as highly effective against the Hepatitis E virus. The compound was selected from a library of nucleotide/nucleoside analog drugs.
Experts noted that because the drug is already undergoing trials for Hepatitis C, it may be possible to introduce it for Hepatitis E treatment relatively quickly.
Scientists caution that further research and clinical trials are needed, but if successful, the discovery could save millions of lives in the near future.
The findings were published on March 6, 2026, in the prestigious medical journal Gut and have been hailed by health experts as a major advancement in combating viral hepatitis.
