In a surprising move, OpenAI has announced the shutdown of its AI video generation app, Sora. The decision comes without any official explanation, raising questions about the future of its video tools.
OpenAI confirmed on Twitter/X that it is shutting down the standalone Sora app.
The company initially stated that “Sora” was shutting down entirely but later clarified that only the app is being discontinued.
What OpenAI said
In its statement, OpenAI acknowledged the community built around the platform:
“We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you.”
The company also admitted the news may be disappointing for users and creators.
OpenAI said it will share more details soon regarding timelines for the shutdown.
It also promised information on API access and how users can preserve their work created on the platform.
No official reason provided
OpenAI did not explain why the Sora app is being shut down.
However, NBC News reported that the closure could be linked to preparations for a potential initial public offering (IPO), as resource-intensive AI services may be scaled back.
Background
Sora was launched in the second half of 2024 as an AI-powered video generation tool.
It saw wider expansion in 2025, with increasing adoption among creators and developers.
The Android version of the Sora app was only released in November 2025.
This followed major updates to the model, which improved the realism of generated videos.
The shutdown also affects a previously announced partnership between The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI.
The deal would have allowed Sora to use Disney’s intellectual property in user-generated videos.
The agreement was also expected to extend to ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities.
With the closure of the Sora app, the deal has now been scrapped entirely.
In a statement to Variety, Disney acknowledged the decision:
The company said it respects OpenAI’s move to exit the video generation space and shift priorities elsewhere. It also highlighted the value of collaboration and said it will continue exploring AI opportunities responsibly.
