Punjab is preparing a series of major decisions to tackle the worsening energy crisis, with key recommendations presented to the chief minister.
The proposed measures could significantly impact daily life, including fuel usage, education, and business operations. The Energy Department has presented a set of important proposals to address the ongoing energy shortage in the province.
According to sources, these recommendations aim to manage fuel consumption, reduce electricity usage, and ensure fair distribution of resources.
Fuel rationing, digital distribution
One of the central proposals is to introduce fuel rationing on the federal model. Authorities are considering a coupon-based or digital system to ensure fair distribution of petrol and diesel.
There is also a proposal to allow fuel supply to limited vehicles on specific days to control consumption.
Schools may close or shift to hybrid system
The Energy Department has recommended closing educational institutions until April 15. At the same time, a hybrid education system is under consideration, allowing a mix of in-person and online learning to reduce energy usage.

Strict guidelines for work-from-home arrangements in private institutions have also been proposed. Additionally, authorities are considering a complete ban on unnecessary events to minimize energy consumption.
Public transport to be expanded
To offset fuel rationing, the government is planning to increase metro and bus services across the province. This move aims to provide affordable and energy-efficient alternatives for daily commuters.
Several proposals focus on reducing electricity consumption. These include switching off LED billboards and decorative lights, while street lights may operate on alternate modes after 10pm.
Market hours likely to be reduced
The Energy Department has also suggested further limiting market operating hours. This step is expected to contribute to overall energy conservation efforts.
The proposed measures highlight the seriousness of the ongoing energy crisis and the government’s intent to take strict steps. Final decisions are expected after consultations at the highest level in Punjab.
