In a bid to win over more users, Google has introduced new tools that let people shift their chat history and personal data into Gemini.
The move comes as competition heats up in the fast-growing AI chatbot market.
The company announced what it calls “switching tools,” designed to help users migrate from other AI chatbots without starting from scratch.
These tools allow users to transfer “memories”—including personal preferences, relationships, and context—directly into Gemini.
How memory transfer works
Gemini guides users through the process by suggesting prompts.
Users can input these prompts into their existing chatbot, generate responses, and then paste that information into Gemini. This helps the AI quickly learn key personal details.
“Instead of starting over from scratch, you can quickly get Gemini up to speed,” the company said.
Importing full chat histories
Beyond memories, users can also transfer entire chat histories.
Google says users simply need to upload chat logs in a zip file—a format supported by major platforms like ChatGPT and Claude.
This feature allows users to continue past conversations and even search through previous chats inside Gemini.
The launch highlights the growing battle among AI companies for user attention.
OpenAI recently revealed that ChatGPT has reached 900 million weekly active users, maintaining its lead in the market.
Meanwhile, Google reported that Gemini has crossed 750 million monthly active users, showing strong growth but still trailing in consumer mindshare.
Google’s new feature removes one of the biggest barriers to switching AI assistants—having to rebuild personal context from scratch.
By making migration easier, the company is hoping more users will shift to Gemini without losing their digital history.
