Ukraine and Saudi Arabia have signed a defense cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening security, technological collaboration, and investment ties.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced the deal during his visit to Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the pact’s potential to protect lives and share expertise.
The agreement, inked ahead of Zelenskiy’s meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, lays the groundwork for:
- Future contracts and technological cooperation between the two nations.
- Investments in defense and security infrastructure.
- Strengthening Ukraine’s role as a global security contributor.
Zelenskiy highlighted that Ukraine’s experience defending against drone and missile attacks could benefit Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries facing similar threats from Iran.
Ukraine’s expertise in drone defense
Since 2022, Ukraine has faced massive drone swarms and missile attacks from Russia, developing expertise in countering unmanned aerial threats.
- Ukrainian interceptor drones and specialized personnel have been deployed to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and are heading to Jordan and Kuwait.
- Zelenskiy noted that local Gulf air defense systems are strong against ballistic threats but less effective against short-range drones, including “Shahed” and FPV drones.
- Ukraine offers cost-effective drone countermeasures as an alternative to expensive missile systems like PAC-3.
Mutual benefits for both nations
The defense partnership is designed to be mutually advantageous:
- Ukraine shares its drone defense expertise and technology.
- Gulf countries contribute financial resources and advanced missile capabilities.
- The collaboration could improve regional security and enhance Ukraine’s global role in counter-drone technology.
Zelenskiy stated, “Our contribution to security in the region will also be a real contribution to global security.”
