Timothée Chalamet’s critically acclaimed table tennis drama Marty Supreme is set to arrive on the streaming platform Max on April 24, following a notable theatrical run and a high-profile awards season.
Directed by Josh Safdie, the film premiered in cinemas on Christmas Day and quickly gained momentum, earning nine nominations at the Academy Awards. These included nods for Best Picture, Best Director for Safdie, Best Screenplay for Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, and Best Actor for Chalamet.
Despite strong expectations, the film did not secure any wins at the ceremony, where Chalamet lost the Best Actor award to Michael B. Jordan for his role in Sinners.
Set in 1950s New York City, Marty Supreme follows the journey of Marty Mauser, an ambitious table tennis player determined to rise to the top, no matter the cost. Alongside Chalamet, the film features an ensemble cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Kevin O'Leary, Tyler, the Creator, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher, Luke Manley and Koto Kawaguchi.
The film received widespread praise from critics throughout its run. However, its awards campaign faced controversy after remarks made by Chalamet during a February town hall. The actor drew backlash after stating he would avoid working in art forms like ballet or opera because “no one cares about them,” a comment that resurfaced during the Oscars and sparked industry criticism.
The controversy cast a shadow over what had otherwise been a highly successful run for both the film and its lead star.
