Rumours of a high-profile Miami Vice reboot have been making waves, with speculation suggesting Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan could take on lead roles—and an even bigger twist hinting at Tom Cruise stepping in as the film’s villain.
The buzz intensified with claims that Cruise might reunite with Joseph Kosinski, the filmmaker behind Top Gun: Maverick, for the project. On paper, it sounded like a blockbuster in the making.
However, insiders have quickly poured cold water on the speculation. Multiple reports indicate that Cruise is not currently attached to the reboot, and it remains unclear whether he was ever formally approached.
The uncertainty doesn’t stop there. While Butler and Jordan have been loosely linked to the lead roles, no official casting announcements or signed deals have been confirmed. For now, the project appears to be in a fluid, early stage, with much still up in the air.
Despite the ambiguity, Universal Pictures has reportedly slated the film for an August 6, 2027 release—meaning key decisions will likely need to materialize soon, possibly at upcoming industry events like CinemaCon.
Meanwhile, Cruise’s schedule remains packed. The actor is preparing for his upcoming film Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, set for release on October 2. He is also collaborating on multiple projects with Christopher McQuarrie, ranging from a new action franchise to a musical, and even a potential return to his eccentric character from Tropic Thunder.
As for the idea of Cruise playing a villain in Miami Vice—for now, it remains more speculation than reality, with fans left waiting to see if the rumour ever turns into something real.
