The country’s business community has rejected ongoing negative propaganda against Pakistan’s GSP Plus status and urged the government to take immediate and effective action against elements seeking to undermine the vital trade facility.
United Business Group (UBG) Patron-in-Chief SM Tanveer, addressing a press conference alongside Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) Chairman Kamran Arshad, said the continuation of GSP Plus status remains essential for Pakistan as it has proved highly beneficial for the national economy.
He said Pakistan secured the status for the period 2024 to 2027 through the collective efforts of all stakeholders, adding that no compromise should be made on its preservation. He added that GSP Plus has contributed significantly to export growth and economic development, playing a key role in stabilising the economy.
SM Tanveer acknowledged prevailing economic challenges and said the government and relevant institutions are taking steps to improve the situation. He added that further free trade agreements are required to enhance exports.
On the occasion, Aptma chairman Kamran Arshad also underscored the importance of GSP Plus, stating that Pakistan’s exports have risen from below $2 billion in 2013 to $9.5 billion, with the status playing a major role in this increase.
He called upon the government to ensure the protection of GSP Plus status under all circumstances and to prioritise national interest so that Pakistan’s trade concessions remain unaffected. Business leaders further said that ongoing consultations between the government and taxpayers, both filers and non-filers, could help create a stable economic environment.
