Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscored on Sunday the potential for Pakistan to earn billions in foreign exchange through the modernisation and enhancement of its port systems.
During his one-day visit to the Karachi Port Trust, PM Shehbaz received a comprehensive briefing on the operations of the ports and the national flag carrier, Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC).
Addressing the meeting, PM Sharif highlighted Pakistan's strategic geographical position, particularly in relation to Central Asian states and recent discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other Central Asian leaders.
"Pakistan offers the most suitable sea trade route for Central Asian states, which have shown a keen interest in using our ports for trade," he said.
Mr Shehbaz emphasised that developing the existing ports in Karachi could significantly boost exports from the value-added industry.
He called for immediate steps to reduce customs clearance times by installing modern equipment and machinery at Port Qasim and Karachi Port Trust, as well as ensuring the prompt installation of advanced scanning machinery at the ports.
PM Sharif directed that measures be prioritized to maximize port capacities, including keeping the Lyari Expressway open for cargo traffic 24/7 to ensure uninterrupted movement of goods. He also stressed the importance of connecting the Malir Expressway to the port to further enhance the delivery of goods.
"The efficiency of rail transport for goods to and from Karachi port must be increased," he added. He proposed reducing the fees for LNG ships at Port Qasim to align with international rates and called for an increase in shipping licenses. Additionally, he urged the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation to develop a comprehensive plan to cut costs and streamline operations.
In his remarks, the premier reiterated the government's commitment to developing the private sector, easing business operations, and facilitating investors. "By the grace of Allah, Pakistan's economy is stable and progressing. We are providing all necessary facilities to exporters to foster the growth of our export industry."
The meeting in Karachi was attended by Federal Ministers Muhammad Aurangzeb, Jam Kamal Khan, Ahad Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarr, Qaiser Ahmad Sheikh, Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, and senior officials from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Karachi Port Trust, Port Qasim Authority, and Pakistan National Shipping Corporation.
During the briefing, the Prime Minister instructed the Karachi Port Trust to prepare a comparative performance report of the port with other regional ports, aiming to identify areas for improvement and capitalize on best practices.
