Pakistan is witnessing a significant surge in local smartphone manufacturing, marking a major step toward digital self-sufficiency and reduced reliance on imports.
Latest data shows that domestic production is increasingly meeting the country’s mobile demand, reflecting strong growth in the telecom manufacturing sector.
According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) documents, more than 4.57 million mobile phones were manufactured locally during the first two months of 2026. Out of these, 2.03 million were smartphones, highlighting growing demand for advanced mobile devices in the country.

This sharp rise in local production indicates that Pakistan’s mobile needs are now largely being met through domestic manufacturing.
Production outpaces imports
The data reveals that local production was many times higher than imports during the same period. While over 4.57 million units were manufactured locally, mobile phone imports were limited to around 8.7 million units in the first two months of 2026.
In February alone, 2.88 million mobile phones were produced locally, compared to only around 400,000 imported units.

Pakistan is also making progress in next-generation technology, with 30,583 5G mobile phones assembled locally in January 2026.
This reflects the country’s gradual shift towards modern telecom infrastructure and high-speed connectivity.
Decline in mobile phone imports
The increase in local manufacturing has significantly reduced dependence on imports. Mobile phone imports dropped by 13.26 percent in February 2026 compared to January, according to PTA data.
The import bill stood at $155.547 million in February, down from $179.336 million in January.
The rapid growth in local mobile manufacturing is being seen as a key milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward digital self-reliance.
With production rising and imports declining, the country is moving closer to building a sustainable and competitive domestic telecom manufacturing ecosystem.
