Former world number one Tiger Woods was arrested Friday afternoon on suspicion of driving under the influence after his Land Rover rolled onto its side while overtaking a work truck on a two-lane road near his home, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities reported that Woods clipped the back of the truck while traveling at high speed, causing his vehicle to overturn. Woods, 50, crawled out of the passenger door before law enforcement arrived. Remarkably, no injuries were reported to him or the other driver.
A breathalyzer test at the Martin County Jail returned no trace of alcohol, prompting investigators to suspect the impairment was linked to drugs or medication. Woods refused a urine test, which under Florida law carries a separate charge.
He was booked on misdemeanor charges including DUI, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Florida law required Woods to remain in jail for at least eight hours before posting bail, after which he was released.

Reactions and background
President Donald Trump commented on the incident, saying:
"I feel so badly. There was an accident. He's got some difficulty. He's an amazing person, amazing man."
This marks the second DUI-related arrest for Woods, who was previously arrested in 2017 in Jupiter, Florida, later pleading guilty to reckless driving.
Woods was also involved in a serious car crash in February 2021, resulting in severe leg fractures.
Over his career, Woods has faced multiple injuries, including back surgeries, ACL reconstruction, Achilles tendon ruptures, and chronic knee issues, which have limited his competitive schedule in recent years.
Recent comeback
Just days before the crash, Woods returned to competitive golf, representing Jupiter Links Golf Club in a TGL Finals match on Tuesday. This was his first competitive appearance since missing the cut at the 2024 British Open. Woods has not confirmed whether he will compete in this year’s Masters Tournament, which begins on April 9 in Augusta.
Career achievements
Woods is widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time:
- 15 major championships (second only to Jack Nicklaus with 18)
- 82 PGA Tour wins, tying the record with Sam Snead
- Held the world number one ranking for 683 weeks, the most in golf history
- Achieved the “Tiger Slam” (holding all four majors simultaneously across 2000-2001)
- Won the 2000 U.S. Open by 15 strokes, the largest margin in major championship history
- His 2019 Masters victory is hailed as one of golf’s greatest comebacks
Despite his storied career, Woods’ recent run has been hampered by injuries and personal challenges, making Friday’s crash a concerning reminder of the risks he continues to face.
