Indian actor Manoj Bajpayee has credited theatre as the foundation of his powerful acting career. Known for standout roles across films and web series, he says his early stage experience shaped his discipline and performance skills.
His remarks offer insight into what it takes to succeed in cinema.
Widely recognized for films like Satya, Gangs of Wasseypur, and Aligarh, Bajpayee began his acting journey in theatre.
He trained under Barry John, where he developed a disciplined and thorough understanding of the craft.
In an interview with Filmfare, Bajpayee emphasized that theatre pushes actors to rely entirely on their own abilities.
“Theatre is an actor’s movement,” he said, explaining that stage performers work without editing, sound effects, or background music—forcing them to sharpen their physical, mental, and emotional skills.
‘No shortcuts’ in acting
Bajpayee highlighted that theatre demands complete preparation.
Actors must be ready to perform for hours without external support, which builds resilience and mastery over the craft. According to him, there is no shortcut to becoming a skilled performer.
Advice for newcomers
The actor strongly encouraged aspiring artists to spend at least two to three years in theatre before entering films.
He explained that the film industry expects actors to deliver from day one, not learn on the job. Theatre, he said, equips actors to handle these pressures effectively.
Bajpayee also spoke about his deep connection with acting.
“Acting takes me into another zone,” he shared, adding that he feels most alive while reading scripts, rehearsing, or performing in front of the camera.
In recent times, Bajpayee has appeared in projects like Jugnuma, The Family Man Season 3, and Inspector Zende.
His consistent presence across films and digital platforms reflects the strong foundation built during his theatre days.
