Canada has strongly condemned Israel’s plans to occupy southern Lebanon, emphasizing that Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected.
The warning comes amid escalating Israeli military actions and rising civilian casualties in Lebanon.
Israeli forces are reportedly preparing to advance up to 30 kilometers inside southern Lebanon. The move follows weeks of airstrikes that have killed at least 1,072 people and wounded nearly 3,000, displacing over a million residents across southern Lebanon, Beirut, and eastern regions.
Canada’s Ministry of Global Affairs expressed solidarity with Lebanon, urging all parties to act in accordance with international law. Officials called for the protection of civilians and infrastructure, including health workers and peacekeepers.
France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot also warned Israel against its planned occupation, stressing that it could have severe humanitarian consequences and worsen the crisis for Lebanese civilians.
Israeli leadership signals aggressive intent
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz indicated the military intends to control the area up to the Litani River. He stated that displaced residents south of the river would not return until security is guaranteed for northern Israeli citizens. Katz referenced previous operations in Rafah and Beit Hanoon, signaling a potentially devastating approach in Lebanon.
Meanwhile, far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich openly called for the annexation of southern Lebanon, asserting that Israel’s new border should extend to the Litani River.
Civilian impact intensifies
Recent Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon have destroyed bridges, homes, and vital infrastructure. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called the bombing of the Qasmiyeh Bridge a “prelude to ground invasion.”
On Wednesday, Lebanese authorities reported nine fatalities in airstrikes, including four in Adloun and two in the Mieh Mieh refugee camp. Earlier attacks in Habboush claimed three lives and left 18 wounded.
The potential ground invasion has raised global concerns about further civilian casualties and displacement. Canada and France’s statements underscore the urgent need to uphold international law and prevent further escalation.
